Grieg, Edvard Hagerup.
Chapter 7. Summary
Grieg was hooked on writing about Vikings and the folk legends surrounding them and the influence of this can be heard in his Concerto. The spirit of Thor, the god of Thunder; Odin, the god of War and the atmosphere of Valhalla - the Hall of Warriors slain in battle can all be pictured in his compositions. Dwarves, elves, trolls and giants can all be found especially in his Lyric Pieces (of which there are many - see Chapter 8) and Humoresques Opus 6).
Edvard Grieg died at Trolhaugen, 4th September, 1907. He was small in stature, small in music output, but a great miniature composer. As well as the music already mentioned he left many pieces which I consider worthy of a hearing, many hardly known.
