Singing - South Shields Amateur Operatic Society

Chapter 5.26 - Snippets of Chorus Lines

We Need to Change!

For 87 years South Shields Amateur Operatic Society has had the pleasure
of entertaining you.

At our Annual General Meeting held in February 2004 it was agreed to
change the name to South Shields Musical Productions.

Since SSAOS was founded in 1917, life and society in general have
changed. No longer is the word Amateur a title to enjoy, but rather it
signifies, less than professional - certainly a concept which cannot be
applied to our Society.

Similarly, the word Operatic can be interpreted as only intellectual or
superior - which does not reflect our aims.

The National Operatic and Dramatic Association, to which we are affiliated,
has identified this problem and consequently we feel our new name better
reflects the performances we produce.

We will continue to produce the professional and varied productions you
expect, so please continue your marvellous support, as we emerge as

South Shields Musical
Productions

Comment by the editor of 'Snippet Pages'. I am glad to see that NODA, having identified the problem, has not, as yet, been so touchy as to remove the term 'Operatic' from their title. I am also encouraged to see that Peter, one of the editors of Chorus Lines', refers, in the Editorial of this edition,  to 'any Amateur Musical/Operatic Society'.

It is a pity, however, that Dictionary definitions of these terms are not accepted by the writer of the above item from this, the 26th edition of Chorus Lines.

From the Concise Oxford Dictionary:
Amateur. - one who practices a thing (esp. an art or game) only as a pastime, esp. unpaid player etc. (opp. professional)
Opera - dramatic performance or composition of which music is an essential part.

As the  writer of of this comment, I am happy to divulge my name which also appears at the head of this page, RON DREW, unlike the writer of the  above snippet from this quarter's edition of Chorus Lines.

As the SSAOS no longer exists this will be the last snippet of Chorus Lines.
