From Issue No 11 (March 1999)
One Year On!! by Mary Whincop
January 15th.
No more getting up at six!
No more bells ringing to say - 'Coffee Time', ten minutes or 'Lunch', a little longer.
Oh, to relax. Retirement - won't it be wonderful!
Hang on. Almost forgot.......... THE AMATEURS.
Yes, I'll take wardrobe. Yes, I have a loft room.
Little did I realise just how much wardrobe we had collected over the years. calling on the services of family and friends, and taking three days of sorting and discarding, I finally had an overflowing loft - ever the boiler sports a dinner jacket - AND I'M STILL ONLY ONE WEEK INTO RETIREMENNT!
Costumes for "BARNUM" - "I'll make them" - silly me. Is this retirement turning my brain?
Clowns here, clowns there, twenty four clowns everywhere! Suits and dresses, bags and hats,General Tom Thumb, stilt walkers, wigs, gluing, sticking, sewing. At last "BARNUM" is ready to ride (April)
..........."Mary, I need a favour?" asks my friend Maureen. "Samantha is to be married and we would love you to make the dresses. Bride, Bridesmaids and if you have time, a suit for me." (Bride's mother)
Retirement on hold a little longer!
Wedding ensemble completed on time - a great success.
.........."Mam, you haven't forgotten Helen's and Louise's costumes for Snow White?" - my granddaughters first panto on ice, in November - Bluebirds, Rabbits and Snowflakes. They were super - well worth the effort!
This retirement lark is great - if I ever get started.
Hang on! I need to make one or two gifts for Christmas. Dressing gowns for the girls, trousers and waistcoat for Kieran (grandson), and velour caftans for my daughter and sisters-in-law.
Merry Christmas to them all!
January 11th - Committee Meeting.
"Mary, what about costumes for "TIN PAN ALLEY"?"
HELP. WHERE'S ALL THAT RETIREMENT? HERE'S HOPING!
