"PRINCESS IDA"
or 'Castle Adamant'
SSAOS 1928 production
Lyrics by Sir W S Gilbert
Gilbert had, over the years, reused many plot-pieces or personality from earlier shows, and most notably from his own earlier years, as the raw material for his own musicals. With "PRINCESS IDA", he had attempted, with rather obviously old-glued-to-new results, to remake one of his youthful pasticcio burlesques as a Savoy opera, which opened on January 5th, 1884.
Music by Sir Arthur A Sullivan
This Comic Opera differs to the usual custom of G & S productions, was divided into three Acts, the final act ending with these words:
It were profanity for poor humanity
To treat as vanity the sway of love.
In no locality nor principality
Is our mortality its sway aboveSSAOS Production at Empire Theatre, South Shields, 6th - 11th February, 1928
