"CALL ME MADAM"

SSAOS 1956 production

The story behind the show:

Mrs Perle Mesta, American hostess and diplomat, entered political life in1935 and was appointed Ambassador of the United States of America to Luxemburg in 1949, serving in that post until 1953.

In 1946 she had been hostess at the coming-out party of Margaret Truman, daughter of president Harry S. Truman, and in 1949 she was Chairman for the Presidential Inaugural Ball.

Her appointment to Luxemburg caused much comment in the United States and was seized upon by Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse to form the germ of a plot of "CALL ME MADAM", produced on Broadway in 1950 with Ethel Merman playing the part of Mrs Sally Adams the Ambassador to the mythical country of Litchenburg
