"GODSPELL"
SSAOS Junior 1982 production
"GODSPELL" is the 4th production of the Junior Amateurs and they are already making a name for exciting staging, making them well placed to venture into rock musical shows. The story of St. Matthew's Gospel is a challenge and thrilling experience for them.
This modern musical opened in New York in 1971 where it played 3,000 performances. In London, at the Wyndhams Theatre it ran for four years with the virtually unknown David Essex, Marti Webb, Jeremy Ions and Julie Covington in the leading roles. To those uninitiated to "GODSPELL", the show has a strange beginning depicting philosophers through the ages with their conflicting views. The show soon bursts to life, however, with the arrival of John the Baptist. Together with lively numbers, some based on hymns and prayers (like 'Day by Day'), the show gallops through the famous parables firmly based on the St Matthew's Gospel, giving them a new, sometimes funny, but never irreverent look.
