The Musical "ANNIE" is based on the American strip cartoon 'Little Orphan Annie', created by Harold Gray which first appeared in the New York Times in August 1824.

A book about the comic strips, discovered by lyricist Martin Charnin when he was looking for a present in a bookshop, inspired the writing of "ANNIE" the musical in the early 1970's.It opened to rave revues at the Alvin Theatre, New York, on 21st April, 1977
