Chapter 1.3 - SSAOS Choral Group
Musical Director - Kathryn Hodgson. Accompanist - Evgenia Rousseau.
After the demise of 'The Grosvenor Singers', a group of singers from the SSAOS under the direction of Stewart Blenkinsop ceased, there was a strong feeling that a new group should be formed to use the singing talents of the Amateurs throughout the year rather than just at Showtime. The outcome was 'Belcanto'.
This new SSAOS choral group, formed in1998, aimed to bring Opera,Operetta, Musical Comedy and good Popular Standards to the region. Although members of the SSAOS were the backbone of the group other singers have been encouraged to join. It made its debut at the Society's barbecue in July 1999, where it was very well received. A number of engagements were undertaken that year from September onwards.
Their first public appearance was a 'Carol Concert' in December 1999 at St Bede's Church, South Shields
In 2001 the name of the choral group was changed to the SSAOS Choral Group.
It functioned until 2003.
